It\u2019s the consistent and disturbing trend&nbsp;that polar scientist Karen Frey&nbsp;has studied for years in the Arctic region. \u201cIt\u2019s really important to reiterate that climate warming has been rapid and persistent in the Arctic over the past several decades, with profound and fundamental shifts across the region as a result,\u201d says Frey, a professor of geography.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull split-background-75 has-darkest-blue-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Karen-Frey-research-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"Karen Frey conducting climate research in the Arctic.\" class=\"wp-image-2831\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Karen-Frey-research-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Karen-Frey-research-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Karen-Frey-research-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Karen-Frey-research-1536x863.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Karen-Frey-research.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns sidebar is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">\u201cCan ecosystems bounce back?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arctic of the future figures to be warmer, stormier, and greener than ever imagined, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/karen-frey\/\">Frey<\/a>, a longtime contributor to and a lead author on the Arctic Report Card, established by NOAA two decades ago as an annual compilation of original, peer-reviewed environmental observations and analyses of a region undergoing rapid and dramatic alterations to weather, climate, oceanic, and land conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As vice chair of the Marine Working Group of the International Arctic Science Committee, Frey meets international colleagues annually at the Arctic Science Summit Week to share data that deepens the collective understanding of the dramatic impact fast-moving climate change is making on the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frey\u2019s summer field research in the Arctic\u2014many times involving Clark graduate students\u2014has examined the impacts of warming and sea ice decline on marine ecosystems in the Bering and Chukchi seas. The Bering Sea has experienced unprecedented declines of sea ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s really important to understand the consequences of that kind of stark drop-off of sea ice,\u201d says Frey, whose research has been funded by NSF, NASA, NOAA, and the Office of Naval Research. \u201cSeawater temperatures became very warm and the temperatures of bottom waters that come into contact with the seafloor also became very warm. I think one big question is what is the resilience of the ecosystem to events like that?
