Racing for answers to prolonged climate threats in the Pacific Islands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Frazier<\/a> and her research colleagues had been warning for years about the worsening drought conditions that could lead to more wildfires in Hawai\u2018i.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it wasn\u2019t until August 2023, when flames raced through the fields and hills of Maui, killing 102 people and destroying the historic town of Lahaina, that the world took notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople are not aware how bad fire can be in Hawai\u2018i. In some years, the percent area burned is higher than what you have in the Western U.S.,\u201d says Frazier, lead author of the Fifth National Climate Assessment\u2019s Hawai\u2018i and Pacific Islands chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She now is exploring the physical and socioeconomic impacts on communities hit hard by such \u201ccompound climate extremes\u201d \u2014 a combination of multiple climate hazards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
